VIN Decoder

Over its 12 year production run, the Maxi had two different styles of Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) or chassis number.

From launch until mid 1979 (the last of the "Leyland Cars" badged Maxis), the VIN ranged between 9 and 13 digits long as the serial number sequence started at 101 for both 'B' (cable change) and 'C' (rod change) series, and leading zeros were not included in the car serial number.  These VINs all start with "AH5S".  In the UK, Maxis with this style of VIN were normally registered with the DVLA as either "Austin", "Leyland Cars" or "Austin Morris".

When the range was revised in 1979 (often unofficially referred to as the "Maxi 1½") the VIN format changed to a fixed 14 digit length beginning "XL".  This format remained for the rest of Maxi production, including the officially named "Maxi 2".  These later cars were normally registered in the UK as "Austin Morris".
